The Aids’ eight+ sources, courses, causes or curses of passing HIV to villagers
This is not world aid’s day. I mean we are not celebrating IDP or Refugee day; we are commemorating World Aids’ Day. So beware and behave that your villages, infested by high beehives, are not turned into HIV hives. Western Equatoria, are we there yet?
Hi villagers, avoid HIVillagers or HIVillages, that is, villagers or villages living with Aids. In the case of South Sudan, we have not real towns but urbanized villages or villagized towns.
I use the term ‘village’ here to symbolize ignorance; ignorance in the sense that they, Hivillagers, do not know, not because they do not want to know, but, of course, they just do not know how to know. For example, they think HIV/Aids is spread through prostitution, but then they are again puzzled when they discover that even some 8-year-olds, who only regard their things as instruments for urinating, get infected or, at least, get affected.
They do not know that HIV is not avoided by putting on condoms (sex sox) like underwear and going to dig or play dominoes and tok-ku-row with a Hivillage neighbor (Hiv+), as some oldies apparently experimented it after receiving an inefficient and inadequate sensitization in Village X somewhere here in South Sudan a few years during the peace negotiation days (2004).
They do not know that HIV is spread by queuing up a hundreds of young boys or girls to be cut (either from above or below their chests) with one scarification or circumcision knife. Should (God forbid) Initiate Number One be Hiv+, all, upto Initiate Number 100, will be HIV+! And we turn round to blame and endorse Omar al Bashir to be taken to ICC for committing genocide in Sudan?
Not only don’t they know that Aids virus can be transmitted by using one scarifying knife to remove the lower teeth of 20 Dinka boys or girls but they also do not know that one tattooing needle is enough to wipe out 50 Nuer boys or girls just in that single ritual.
I learn from one Nuer intellectual in a long, self-agrandizing and somewhat parochial historical article in The Citizen newspaper that the six parallel lines on the forehead of a Nuer man are a spiritual covenant between man and God as stated in the (see picture) caption here. Therefore, scarification may not be an old traditional practice for some tribes. However, if I were the Chief-in-Chief (C-in-C) of all the South Sudanese traditional and extra-additional leaders, I would form a South Sudan Cultural Editorial Council to strike out of our customs every coma or fullstop that puts our lives into the comas or fullstops of modern civilization e.g. HIV/Aids scourge.
Like the cutting edge of that proverbial life-cutting knife, our traditional doctors should know that one needle used in the acupuncture treatment (pain epicentre piercing) is enough to send all those patients…
Or all the tooth-removing candidates raw in one row to their graves!
Maybe I should also remind those old village doctors in Mundari or Bor, who suck out ‘duony’ (bad blood believed to be causing the pain) from the patient’s forehead, chest or back, will remain with Aids virus in their cheeks however clean they spit away the blood. By the way, is it still being practiced? I last received this treatment in late 80s before I ‘jumped into the bush’. And to those who have come out of the bush (to towns), please, let the bush come out of you as well.
But Lotuhos must not overlook the fact that ear-serrating, or Kachipo/Jie must be told that lip-burrowing, or all ladies must know that ear-piercing, when done with a communal or unsterilized instrument, makes you a permanent member of the HIVillage!
Even thorn removing with another thorn or a needle in the cattle camp can be as fatal as cutting the umbilical cord with a knife or razor blade borrowed from Mama-Ngadi.
And this is how I came to write this piece of mine for my peace of mind. I asked my old woman, “Mama, how was my cord cut?” She interjected, “Ho, good memories, indeed! Your ‘dugem’ (birth welcomer) borrowed a broken and rusty half of an old razor blade from Nyiwei Ngong. That one was used for cutting the umblical cord of Buoth (her son) a year before your were born.” So help me God!
Hey, I can also remember. Those days when we were still in the cattle camp or military training camp, beating as a punishment was administered on us communally, and moreover on our bare buttocks till some blood came out. This, done with one whip and by one punisher, must stop!
I mean, any blood-shedding ritual must stop, and if it must not, then it must be medically administered. And, still, if it must not, then let there be sterilization. But then, the Minister for Health should, instead of buying 11 four-wheel autos for fighting Aids in Eastern Equatoria, should intervene to help me explain why and how a furious, serial boy-beater would be convinced to first ask some lasses (young cattle camp ladies) to boil some lasoes (or ‘cuel’, that cruel cow rope) before being administered on the behinds of the boys, each round of lashes at a time…!
As as if that is not enough, let the Central Equatoria folks, especially their government, who are on mass campaign for the boys’ cutting, take note. Needless to ask whether the Jews, the Arabs, the Muslims, our very own Bahr-al-Ghazalians, etc. are 60-percent HIV immune, cutting was not a communal thing in this part of the land of Cush but Aids is transforming cultures. Nevertheless, I still need more explanation on why circumcision, being one of the HIV/Aids prevention measures, is would not form a picture of somebody de-nailed and then ordered to dip his nail-less fingers in hot-peppered sauce. Is it because those small living things can not cling on a ‘dry-head stick’ of a sex-hungry rural nigger or what? In addition, I wonder if the Bor bros are going to drop those ‘Anguala’ mocking songs and send their ‘Ayuk’ boys to the cutting camp, no more ‘duel’ or fattening picnic unless used for sanitizing and sensitizing the traditionally misled lads, please.
Some few days ago, I happened to witness my friends’ (Agow Woi and Anyieth Chaat) weddding at the Freedom Hall in Juba. I got what I wanted: a message from Uncle Alier Ayom, “Let your children go to VCT before going to honeymoon!” Hm, HmHmHmHmHmHm, was all what the ‘crowd’ chewed as he begged the rigid community to adopt new lifestyles and adapt to modern medical practices when it comes to health issues.
To sum it up, I want someone to bell the hell out of the cat: to ask the newly weds to first visit the VCT (voluntary counseling and testing) clinic before their honey month; To ask a boy/girlfriend to do that if they cannot wait for the right time at their ripe season (A); To, after testing and tasting, apply their love super glue (B) whenever, wherever and by whoever gets tempted, or in other words, to suggest using sex sox (C); or failure to do that, agree to sign death warrant (D) before entering the real deal live. I mean the A,B, C, and then D of modern HIV/Aids control—Abstain, Be faithful, Be Careful i.e. Condomise, or Die! Now choose.
Wait a minute: Are you sure you are not among the 300,000 South Sudanese Hivaids? If not sure, then, pleae, visit now VCT.
Now read this sonnet and the ensuing poems from my “The Black Christs of Africa” ,
Honeymoon in Thighland
Don’t you yet sigh
That ye are war-free.
Chances being pretty high
From your problem tree,
Thence lies your end very nigh.
You’re – before you’re three –,
Just ambushed in your very thigh,
By your life sucked away on love spree.
As he asks you to repay his pocket money,
Never ever display him your socket honey.
When waitressing in the hotel,
Avoid witnessing his hot tail.
When holidaying in your Thailand,
Stop honeymooning in her Thighland.
The Lethal Penisillean Injection!
Yet it’s injected.
It’s all lethal,
Yet it isn’t rejected.
Like a single dose of Penicillin V,
In an antibiotic vial,
This simple toss of penis-ill-lean v,
An un-antibody virus,
Hysterically doused with sweet injection,
Eventually roused with bitter interjection,
Ends in fatal infection,
Hence in total rejection.
This delicious vaccination,
Regarded as malicious abomination,
Regretted with social discrimination,
Is all over the nation.
The WWW III
The whole world in a woe war!
It has been in it for millennia.
But that is a lie by the media.
It was not a real worldwide war.
We’re in the worst world war
Ever thought—never fought
By all countries caught and taught.
The third world war
Is ageless and sageless
Statusless and stateless
Classless and sexless
Religionless and regionless.
It’s even a dotcom warfare
That attacks the intellectual geniuses
And spreads faster than internet viruses.
Of the WWW III, aka Aids, beware!
